The tension stemmed from a controversial government decision to relocate the upcoming 2026 Mashujaa Day national celebrations.

Originally slated for the iconic, high-altitude training center of Kamariny Stadium in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, the national event was abruptly moved to the newly upgraded Kipchoge Keino Stadium in neighboring Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

The decision was prompted by delays in construction works at Kamariny, which made it unlikely the venue would be ready in time for the October 20 holiday.

The sudden shift ignited anger among local youth and political groups in Elgeyo Marakwet, who felt sidelined by the national administration.

Frustrated by perceived marginalization, local youth factions threatened to organize a parallel counter-event on Mashujaa Day.

In a move designed to send a firm political message to the administration, youth leaders threatened to invite prominent opposition figures—including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—to address them in Iten, demonstrating their local political clout and protesting what they described as forgotten development promises.

Recognizing the dangerous precedent of losing grip over his core constituency, President Ruto initiated a swift political intervention.

Steering the strategy through Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen—himself a native of Elgeyo Marakwet—the administration reconfigured the event into a historic multi-county celebration.

Instead of isolating the celebration within Uasin Gishu, the government announced that this year’s national fete will be officially co-hosted by three neighboring counties: Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, and Uasin Gishu.
Following a high-level National Celebrations Steering Committee meeting at Harambee House, CS Murkomen issued a statement outlining the collaborative framework:

“The hosting of the Mashujaa Day commemoration in different parts of our country is a demonstration of the Kenya Kwanza Government’s commitment to inclusivity, equity, and national unity.
In a historic first, this year’s Mashujaa Day will be co-hosted by three counties: Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, and Uasin Gishu.
This afternoon, I chaired the 2026 Mashujaa Day National Celebrations Steering Committee meeting at Harambee House. The committee is on schedule to deliver sports infrastructure, roads, energy, and other ancillary projects in the three counties in readiness for the week-long activities that will culminate in the Mashujaa Day celebration at the Kipchoge Stadium in Eldoret.”

The meeting was attended by key government figures, including Principal Secretaries Dr. Raymond Omollo (Internal Security), Dr. Patrick Mariru (Defence), and Elijah Mwangi (Sports), along with Governors Jonathan Bii (Uasin Gishu) and Wisley Rotich (Elgeyo-Marakwet).

A Strategic Win for the Administration

The shared-hosting solution cleverly addresses the core issues behind the discontent:

• Resource Allocation: Infrastructure funding, road upgrades, and energy projects will be distributed across all three counties rather than concentrated solely in Eldoret.
• Regional Ownership: Elgeyo Marakwet and Nandi will participate in a week-long series of national cultural and athletic events leading up to the main parade at Kipchoge Keino Stadium.
