Targeted Killing: Prominent Mental Health Researcher Dr. Victoria Mutiso Shot Dead in Nairobi
NAIROBI, Kenya — Prominent clinical psychologist and mental health researcher Dr. Victoria Mutiso was shot and killed on Wednesday morning in what senior police officers have termed a targeted assassination.
Dr. Mutiso, the head of research at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation (AMHRTF), was traveling in a taxi near Kenyatta National Hospital when her vehicle was blocked by a four-wheel-drive car.
Gunmen on a motorcycle immediately moved in and opened fire at close range before escaping the scene.
She was rushed to the hospital shortly after the attack but succumbed to her injuries while receiving emergency treatment.

Nairobi Police Boss Issa Mohamud confirmed the fatality, stating that homicide detectives have already launched an investigation into the execution-style murder.
“This was a targeted murder, and we are actively pursuing the killers,” Mohamud said, noting that investigators have secured initial clues regarding the suspects.
Crime scene investigators recovered a spent cartridge at the scene, which has been submitted for ballistic examination.
Investigators revealed that the assailants had trailed Dr. Mutiso from her home near the Junction area in Kilimani before executing the ambush.
Police sources indicated that Dr. Mutiso had previously reported threats to her life at the Kilimani Police Station after gunmen on a motorcycle pointed a weapon at her during a recent traffic jam.
Detectives are currently probing multiple leads, including reported family disputes over property and personal matters surrounding her upcoming wedding, which she was scheduled to solemnize in a few weeks.
Dr. Mutiso, a mother of two, was a leading expert in public mental health, specializing in youth mental well-being, substance abuse, and community health integration across Kenya.
She served as a principal researcher on numerous international projects, including co-leading Project HOPE, an initiative focused on homeless individuals with severe mental illness in Africa.
