NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Cabinet Secretary for Trade and veteran politician Moses Kuria has sent shockwaves across the political landscape after announcing a total exit from the 2027 electoral race, directly taking aim at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In a scathing social media statement that quickly went viral, Kuria declared he will not be seeking any elective seat in the Mount Kenya region come 2027, effectively stepping back to leave Gachagua to navigate the region’s volatile politics alone.

Tensions Peak Over Violence Allegations

The public fallout erupted after Gachagua accused Kuria without presenting evidence of organizing and importing political goons during political engagements in Ol Kalou. Pushing back against the allegations, Kuria expressed deep frustration over what he described as persistent and unfounded attacks on his character.

“Even if you accuse me 1,000 times of planning violence—like you have done again today in Ol Kalou—without proof, it will not wash,” Kuria wrote in his direct message to Gachagua.

Kuria reminded the former Deputy President of previous political friction dating back to 2020 and 2021, when he warned against folding Mount Kenya regional political outfits into a single coalition party without safeguarding local interests.

A Surrender With a Warning

While stepping aside, Kuria delivered a grim prophecy regarding Gachagua’s efforts to consolidate power in the Mount Kenya political bloc.
“Today I let you be yet again. You can have candidates all over Mt Kenya. I will not even vie for any seat myself. BUT… It will end up in tears,” Kuria warned. “Now that you are the undisputed King, cut me the slack and give me some peace.”

Kuria concluded his explosive statement by noting he would watch Gachagua’s political leadership unfold over the next 12 months. The shock announcement has ignited fierce debates online, raising critical questions about the future unity of the Mount Kenya vote ahead of the 2027 General Election.
