High Court Finds Ex-Governor Okoth Obado Guilty of Sharon Otieno Murder
In a landmark decision delivered on Thursday, July 23, 2026, the High Court of Kenya found former Migori Governor Zacharia Okoth Obado and two co-accused guilty of the murder of university student Sharon Otieno.
The presiding judge ruled that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, ending a high-profile legal battle that has gripped the nation for nearly eight years.
A Tragic Night in 2018
The ruling brings closure to a brutal crime dating back to September 2018. Sharon Otieno, then a student at Rongo University, was abducted alongside Nation Media Group journalist Barrack Oduor after leaving a meeting at a hotel in Rongo.
While Oduor managed to escape by leaping from the moving vehicle, Otieno was taken by her abductors. Her body was later discovered dumped near Kodera Forest in Uriri, Homa Bay County.
According to autopsy reports conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor, Sharon suffered a horrific death caused by severe bleeding from multiple stab wounds and strangulation.

The killing originally sparked widespread national outrage, prompting a multi-agency police crackdown that quickly focused on senior officials within the Migori County government.
Obado and his co-defendants were first arraigned on September 24, 2018, where they pleaded not guilty.
