Political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election continue to dominate Kenya’s political landscape, with senior leaders increasingly speaking out about their ambitions as parties and alliances position themselves for the high-stakes contest.

As speculation over potential presidential tickets intensifies, fresh remarks from one of the country’s veteran politicians have reignited debate over who could ultimately emerge as President William Ruto’s preferred deputy.

Speaking during a public engagement on Tuesday, veteran politician Oburu Odinga declared that he has what it takes to serve as President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 General Election, expressing confidence that he is well qualified for the role.

In his remarks, Oburu dismissed suggestions that age should be used to disqualify him from consideration, insisting that experience, wisdom and a deep understanding of the country’s political and economic challenges are more important than youthful appeal.

“Mimi nimetosha,” Oburu said, confidently asserting that he possesses the leadership credentials required to deputize the Head of State if called upon.

The outspoken legislator argued that his decades in public service have equipped him with invaluable experience in governance, legislation and national leadership. He maintained that Kenya needs leaders who understand the country’s history while also helping shape its future.

Oburu further noted that discussions surrounding the 2027 succession race should focus on competence rather than political stereotypes, saying every qualified Kenyan has a constitutional right to seek or be considered for high office.

His comments come amid growing political speculation over President Ruto’s running mate as different leaders across the country continue positioning themselves ahead of the next election.

Several names have been floated by political analysts, with regional balance and coalition-building expected to play a significant role in determining the final choice.

Political observers believe the question of Ruto’s running mate could become one of the defining issues in the lead-up to the 2027 polls, especially as new political alliances continue to emerge and existing ones undergo major restructuring.

Oburu’s remarks have already generated mixed reactions across the political divide. Supporters praised his confidence and pointed to his extensive political experience, arguing that he remains an influential figure capable of contributing to national leadership.

Critics, however, questioned whether his declaration reflects ongoing negotiations within the country’s shifting political formations or is simply an expression of personal ambition.

Although President Ruto has not publicly indicated who he would prefer as his running mate for the next election, leaders from various political camps continue to lobby for greater representation within the anticipated coalition.

With the race toward 2027 gradually gathering momentum, Oburu’s bold declaration is likely to fuel further debate over succession politics and the delicate balancing act expected to shape one of the country’s most consequential electoral contests.
