Former Raila Odinga aide to seek Suba North seat on Orange party ticket
NAIROBI, Nov 2: Silas Jakakimba today formally left the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), giving the party another boost ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Jakakimba was received at ODM’s Chungwa House headquarters by party Secretary General Catherine Omanyo, who welcomed him into the party.
In a message afterwards, ODM celebrated the move and described him as a new member of its growing political family. “Welcome to the Chama Kubwa, Silas Jakakimba!” the party said.
According to ODM, Jakakimba has left UDA to pursue his 2027 parliamentary ambition for Suba North Constituency on the party’s ticket. He previously served as UDA’s Homa Bay County Secretary.
The party highlighted his longstanding association with the political family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, popularly known as Baba. It said his entry strengthens the Broad-Based Government partnership and its commitment to a united political platform for Kenyans.
His decision is expected to bring fresh energy to the Suba North contest. The constituency is currently represented by ODM’s Millie Odhiambo, and politicians are already positioning themselves for the next General Election.
Jakakimba’s defection comes shortly after reports that Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was also leaving UDA for ODM. Together, the two moves are seen as part of a wider political realignment that could strengthen ODM’s presence in different parts of the country.
ODM said it remains focused on consolidating support nationwide and strengthening its grassroots structures. It expressed optimism about working with Jakakimba and the people of Suba North towards a common political and development agenda.
As 2027 draws closer, attention will turn to whether more politicians will follow the same path and join the Orange party in the coming months.
