Lawyer and political commentator Kibe Mungai has given his view on the role Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna could play in the Mount Kenya region, following Sifuna’s recent visit to Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County.
The comments come as opposition leaders discuss possible partnerships ahead of the 2027 General Election. Mount Kenya carries significant weight in presidential contests, which has drawn attention to the visit.
Some observers saw the meeting as a step toward closer relations among opposition figures who want to form a common platform against President William Ruto’s administration. Mungai’s remarks point to Sifuna’s ability to engage voters outside his traditional support base.
One open question in the opposition is whether leaders from different regions can work together effectively. Sifuna has spoken in favour of political cooperation, and his link to the Linda Mwananchi movement has increased his national profile. Discussions continue on leadership arrangements and how responsibilities might be divided in any future coalition.
Gachagua, the former Deputy President, continues to mobilise support in Mount Kenya, and Wamunyoro has become a place where he hosts MPs and MCAs.
Others in the region have commented on the relationship between the two. Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata said in June that Sifuna needs to engage Gachagua to gain influence in Mount Kenya. Kang’ata also urged Sifuna, James Orengo and Babu Owino to begin dialogue with Gachagua.
Talks among opposition groups have involved other figures as well. Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i met Linda Mwananchi leaders in efforts to agree on a joint opposition presidential candidate.
Reports also say the Sifuna-Orengo grouping has complicated the power-sharing plans of the Gachagua-Kalonzo alliance, with Sifuna viewed as a possible contender for the running mate position.
As the election approaches, more consultations and alliance discussions are expected among the different camps. It is not yet clear whether the contact between Sifuna and Gachagua will lead to a formal political partnership.
