Uhuru’s decision followed a High Court ruling upholding a legal restriction preventing retired presidents from continuing to hold leadership positions in political parties beyond the prescribed period. He has said he is prepared to oversee a lawful transition.
Kioni has since publicly offered himself for the position of Jubilee Party leader. He said he would seek the position through the party’s constitution and established democratic procedures, meaning delegates will ultimately have a role in determining who takes over from Uhuru.
