A group of widows from Nairobi has publicly criticized Lang’ata Member of Parliament Felix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, accusing him of exploiting their plight for political optics after allegedly failing to fulfill a financial commitment.

The grievances center on an event organized to commemorate International Widows Day, during which the lawmaker publicly pledged KSh5 million to support local widow-led community initiatives and economic empowerment groups across the constituency.

Representatives from the group expressed frustration, claiming that months after the public declaration, no funds have been disbursed to the intended beneficiaries.

According to the group’s leadership, the pledge was widely publicized at the time, boosting the MP’s public image and framing him as a champion of vulnerable groups in Nairobi.

However, community organizers maintain that subsequent attempts to follow up with the parliamentary constituency office have yielded empty promises and administrative delays.

They argued that leveraging vulnerable demographics for public relations without honoring financial commitments causes significant harm, leaving small self-help groups stranded after planning around the promised capital.

The group accused the legislator of treating serious social economic support measures as mere political rhetoric meant to secure political goodwill. They called on the MP to either immediately honor the full amount or publicly address the status of the pledged support.

The beneficiaries emphasized that community empowerment funds should not be converted into campaign tools or publicity stunts, urging leaders across the board to treat pledges made to disadvantaged families with integrity and accountability.

The allegations add to growing public scrutiny surrounding political leaders who make substantial cash pledges at public gatherings without establishing transparent mechanisms for disbursement.

The MP’s team has yet to issue an official response regarding the financial pledge or the timeline for its release.
