Embu Elders Reject Kindiki’s Nembure Declaration, Denounce Regional Split
EMBU, Kenya — Emerging video footage has revealed sharp opposition from traditional leaders in Embu County following a controversial regional political gathering hosted by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
The friction stems from a recent assembly held at Nembure Grounds in Manyatta constituency. During the event, a section of political allies and attending delegates pushed a resolution declaring Mount Kenya East politically distinct from Mount Kenya West. The move was framed as an effort by Kindiki to consolidate political backing across the eastern bloc.
However, bona fide leadership from the Embu Council of Elders (Nyagi ya Ndiriri) has explicitly distanced itself from the declaration, calling the initiative illegitimate and deeply divisive.
In video footage circulated online and broadcast by major outlets, including KTN News, council chairman Andrew Ireri condemned the Nembure resolutions. Speaking on behalf of the elders, Ireri declared that those present at the assembly lacked the official mandate to speak for the wider community.A

“We come here to oppose and say that the meeting at Nembure was full of traitors,” Ireri stated in the clip, alleging that participants were improperly mobilized with cash incentives.
He further cautioned that attempting to sever political ties between Mount Kenya East and West risks fragmenting community stability for short-term political gain.
The council maintained that no unilateral faction can appoint a regional spokesperson or split Mount Kenya without broad, traditional consensus across all districts. The elders vowed to resist any political maneuvering aimed at factionalizing the region.
As reported by Citizen Digital, the public pushback highlights growing friction over Mount Kenya’s political direction, posing a direct challenge to Deputy President Kindiki’s consolidation efforts.
