Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has found himself on the receiving end of harsh public criticism following his recent political tour of Embu County.

Flanked by his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) brigade, Gachagua visited the region to push his opposition agenda, coming hot on the heels of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s recent push in the region.

However, his message was quickly overshadowed by intense backlash over a public declaration he made during the rally.

Speaking to residents, Gachagua openly endorsed Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji for the Embu County gubernatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

The move has drawn furious reactions from both political observers and voters, who accuse the former Deputy President of double standards.

Prior to the Embu tour, Gachagua had repeatedly assured DCP members and prospective political candidates that the party would uphold democratic principles, promising free, fair, and transparent nominations for all elective seats.

By publicly favoring Mukunji, critics argue that Gachagua has effectively locked out other aspirants and undermined the internal democracy he vowed to safeguard.

Political commentators contend that early endorsements signal a biased nomination process, leaving other candidates within the DCP without a level playing field.

Kenyans across social media platforms and local political forums have called out Gachagua for reneging on his pledge. Opponents and community members alike argue that handpicking candidates risks alienating party loyalists and causing internal divisions within the DCP.

As the political heat intensifies in Mount Kenya, Gachagua faces growing pressure to address the backlash and clarify whether his party will truly commit to competitive primaries or stick to preferential handpicking ahead of 2027.
