Crisis in ODM: Governor Ole Lenku Threatens to Shut Down Party Operations in Kajiado

KAJIADO, Kenya — The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) faces an escalating internal rift following a stark warning from Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, who threatened to halt party operations in the region.

Speaking on Saturday, August 22, 2026, the second-term governor accused party officials of political betrayal.

The dispute centers on claims that senior ODM figures campaigned for State House Comptroller Katoo Ole Metito, a candidate not running on an ODM ticket, rather than backing ODM’s local line-up.

According to reports covered on People Daily Digital, Lenku expressed frustration over the move, demanding an apology from the leadership under acting party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga.

Lenku affirmed that he is backing his deputy, Martin Moshisho, for the gubernatorial seat on an ODM ticket while planning his own bid for the Kajiado Senate seat in the 2027 General Election.

“We built ODM in Kajiado when it had only two MCAs,” Lenku stated, emphasizing the sacrifices made by local supporters under the legacy of the late party leader Raila Odinga.

He warned that if self-interested individuals continue misusing money to sabotage party interests, ODM operations in the county would be shut down completely.

The rift comes amid a wave of defections in the region. On August 10, several local leaders and MCAs crossed over to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

Lenku signaled that the region’s political landscape has shifted permanently, declaring that the “new Maa nation” will actively resist political betrayal and decisions imposed from outside.
