Kenyans Fire Back at Gachagua Over Claims of Role in Kenya’s Historic Democratic Struggle

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked outrage online after attempting to claim credit for historical political shifts led by icon Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, and other key reformists.

Speaking to regional leaders during a consultative meeting at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County, Gachagua claimed he played a central role in the 1992 struggle for multiparty democracy.

The former DP went further to boast that he has “never been on a losing team since 1992,” citing his active participation in the pivotal 2002 political transition when President Mwai Kibaki succeeded Daniel arap Moi.

Closing his remarks, Gachagua issued a sharp warning to President William Ruto, telling him to prepare for a homebound exit in the next general election.

However, Gachagua’s narrative backfired immediately, sparking backlash across social media.

Kenyans condemned the remarks as a self-serving rewrite of history, urging him not to usurp the legacy of veteran freedom fighters and democracy champions who made immense sacrifices for the nation.

Critics pointed out the irony in Gachagua’s statements, noting his well-documented past as an administration officer during the Moi regime—a period when the very leaders he named were fighting for democratic expansion.

Citizens online cautioned the former DP against undermining the memory of heroes who carried the burden of the reform struggle.

Many called on political leaders to demonstrate humility rather than co-opting historical moments for immediate political gains. As political tensions continue to simmer ahead of upcoming elections, Gachagua’s bold assertions appear to have alienated voters across the country.
