Gachagua Declares Role as Campaign Chief If Not Chosen Opposition Flagbearer
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that he will take up the position of Director of Presidential Campaigns if he is not selected as the United Opposition’s candidate for the 2027 General Election.
Speaking at his Wamunyoro home during a consultative visit by a Wiper Party delegation, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader reiterated his commitment to ousting President William Ruto.
Gachagua asserted his political strategy credentials, describing himself as a “shrewd” operator in presidential races. He claimed that even President Ruto recognizes his campaign capabilities and views him as a formidable opponent.

“If I will not be the opposition’s flag bearer, I will be the director of the presidential campaigns,” Gachagua stated, expressing confidence that a well-coordinated opposition push will leave the current administration reeling at the ballot box.
The announcement comes amid ongoing debates within the United Opposition regarding how and when to select their 2027 flagbearer.
Gachagua has consistently advocated for a single presidential candidate, advising opposition leaders to consolidate their regional bases before negotiating the top ticket.
However, while most coalition principals favor a united front, opinions differ on timing. Gachagua suggests waiting until roughly three months before the election to make the final decision, whereas others push for an earlier unveiling to maximize mobilization time.
Meanwhile, skepticism remains within some ranks. Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Jeremiah Kioni recently expressed doubt that opposition leaders will reach a consensus, suggesting candidates might run independently and unite in the event of a runoff.
Despite these internal dynamics, Gachagua remains resolute, promising to steer the opposition’s campaign machine regardless of who ultimately takes the presidential ticket.
