Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has reignited debate over the 2022 presidential election dynamics, asserting that retired President Uhuru Kenyatta never genuinely intended to make Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga president.
Speaking on political realignments, the ODM lawmaker stated that he vehemently refuses to believe that Kenyatta was committed to delivering the presidency to Odinga, explaining that he never witnessed tangible efforts or strategic dedication from the former head of state toward that goal.
Amisi maintained that despite the high-profile endorsement of Odinga by the previous administration, the actual political support and campaign machinery deployed fell short of what was required to secure a national victory.
He suggested that the strategic posture adopted by the former president’s inner circle did not align with a serious push to hand over power to the opposition veteran.
The Saboti MP noted that he had previously raised concerns within the Azimio coalition regarding the authenticity of Kenyatta’s backing, arguing that key political players failed to recognize the underlying games at play.
According to Amisi, relying on state machinery and elite endorsements without aggressive, independent mobilization left the campaign vulnerable to strategic miscalculations.
His remarks reflect ongoing retrospection within opposition ranks over the outcome of the 2022 general elections. Amisi argued that historical political lessons prove that high-level state backing often serves broader strategic interests rather than genuine power transfer.
He urged the opposition to learn from past elections and avoid relying on external political patrons or elite arrangements, emphasizing that future electoral success depends on genuine grassroots mobilization, clear policy vision, and independent strategic planning rather than political handshakes.
