Diplomatic friction in East Africa has deepened following statements by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni.
In a series of public declarations, Muhoozi called for a strict enforcement against foreign nationals operating within Uganda, directing Turkish citizens in particular to wind up operations and leave the country immediately.
The move mirrors recent immigration policies in neighboring Kenya, where President William Ruto’s administration ordered unregistered foreign nationals to regularize their documentation or exit.
Echoing those regional enforcement measures, Muhoozi announced that he has severed all personal and official ties with Turkish interests in Kampala.
He further instructed political associates within the Patriotic League of Uganda to organize a major public demonstration at the Turkish Embassy on September 18, 2026. The scheduled protest at the diplomatic mission marks a sharp escalation in posture.
Military and political figures supporting Muhoozi have been put on notice to coordinate the march, with warnings issued that anyone attempting to defend or represent Turkish interests during the action will face immediate detention.
The rhetoric reflects growing nationalism across the region regarding foreign economic footprints and compliance with domestic laws. While the planned September 18 march approaches, official diplomatic channels remain quiet.
No official response from the Turkish government or the Turkish Embassy in Kampala had been provided regarding the ultimatum or the upcoming protest.
