Orengo Declares 2027 Presidential Bid, Calls for Political Tolerance in Nyanza

OYUGIS, Kenya — Siaya Governor James Orengo has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Friday in Oyugis, Homa Bay County, Orengo urged political leaders and communities across the Nyanza region to champion sober, mature, and issue-based politics, emphasizing that electoral competition must not cause division.

Orengo made the announcement during the burial of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer Steven Onyango. He was accompanied by Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino alongside other prominent leaders affiliated with the Linda Mwananchi movement.

The delegation’s appearance in Oyugis comes barely three weeks after a Linda Mwananchi political rally in Homa Bay Town was marred by chaos and violent clashes. Addressing the gathering, the Siaya county chief insisted that democratic spaces must remain open for respectful discourse.

“Competition for leadership should never be a reason to divide our people,” Orengo stated, advocating for unity and democratic tolerance.

Reinforcing the message, Babu Owino strongly condemned political violence and incitement, calling the earlier disruption in Homa Bay deeply unfortunate. He appealed directly to the youth, stressing that young people should never be manipulated into turning against one another over political rivalries.

Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang defended the Linda Mwananchi brigade, affirming that every leader has an unalienable right to express their political convictions free from intimidation, violence, or state interference. Kajwang described the previous assault on their rally as completely unacceptable and demanded that such hostility not be repeated.

Orengo’s entry into the 2027 presidential race signals a major political shift in the region, setting the stage for intense competition as opposition figures realign their strategies.
