Uganda Clears 60 Ebola Contacts Linked to Kenyan Traveller, Reaffirms Virus-Free Status
KAMPALA, Uganda — Health authorities in Uganda have discharged 60 individuals monitored for potential Ebola exposure following contact with an infected Kenyan traveller. The group completed the mandatory 21-day observation period without developing symptoms.
Speaking on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Minister of Health Dr. Chris Baryomunsi confirmed that all traced contacts across entry points, transit routes, and hotels were clear of the virus.
He emphasized that Uganda remains officially Ebola-free, with no confirmed cases or deaths recorded nationwide since the country declared its Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak over on July 28.
Addressing public concerns, Baryomunsi verified that Kasese District, located near the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border, registered no cases tied to the recent monitoring exercise.

“Uganda remains Ebola-free, with no confirmed cases recorded since the country declared the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak over,” Baryomunsi stated, while urging continued vigilance.
To mitigate transmission risks from neighbouring nations, Uganda has strengthened passenger screening at Entebbe International Airport and key land crossings. Health officials have mandated passenger locator forms and expanded community surveillance.
Additionally, Uganda is supporting cross-border containment efforts in the DRC by establishing three treatment units with a total capacity of 240 beds.
The regional health situation remains under intense observation. Kenya has recorded nine Ebola infections and one fatality involving a man who travelled from the DRC through Uganda to Nairobi earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Nigerian health authorities are conducting genomic sequencing on an isolated case in Abuja involving a Ugandan-born resident.
Regional public health agencies continue to urge strict surveillance along busy transit corridors to prevent further cross-border spread.
