Gachagua Calls for Action After Deadly Mtito Andei Highway Crash

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged road safety authorities and motorists to take immediate measures to curb highway fatalities following a horrific road accident near Mtito Andei that claimed 22 lives on Sunday morning.

The head-on collision occurred at around 7:00 AM at Kanga, along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, involving a heavy lorry and a passenger bus belonging to The Power of the Word Church International. The bus was transporting worshippers returning to Mombasa after attending a burial ceremony.

Preliminary police reports suggest the bus was attempting to overtake another vehicle when it slammed directly into the oncoming lorry. Twenty passengers died on the spot, while two others succumbed to severe injuries while undergoing emergency treatment.

Sixteen survivors were rushed to Mtito Andei and Makindu Sub-County hospitals, where medical staff continue to manage various degrees of injuries.

In a official statement published on X on Sunday, Gachagua expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and extended condolences to the affected families.

“The disastrous crash at Mtito Andei today, which has robbed our nation of 22 lives, is a painful ordeal for all of us as the people of Kenya,” Gachagua stated, adding that “no human being deserves to lose a life out of negligence and recklessness.”

He cautioned motorists to observe extra care on the roads, noting the risk posed by wet weather conditions and the expected surge in holiday travel ahead of the Christmas season. Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. also sent sympathies and confirmed local government support for the victims.

The incident marks another tragic crash on the Nairobi-Mombasa corridor, coming just weeks after a similar collision claimed 17 lives on October 3. Police and safety investigators remain at the scene as investigations continue to establish the full cause of the accident.
