Electrifying Moments as ODM Leaders Walk Out During Raila’s Anniversary in Bondo
BONDO, Kenya — October 15, 2026 — Thousands of Kenyans today gathered at the Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County, alongside the family of the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, to mark the first anniversary of his passing.
While the memorial was intended to honor the legacy of the veteran politician who passed away in India last year, an unexpected political showdown unfolded at the venue, sparking widespread reaction across social media.
The celebration took a dramatic turn when a section of ODM leaders allied to the broad-based government—led by Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo—exited the venue immediately after completing their speeches.
Their abrupt departure occurred just as ODM Secretary-General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was invited to the podium to address the gathering.

Despite the sudden exit of the broad-based faction, the vast crowd remained rooted at the venue, breaking into wild, electrifying chants of “Sifuna! Sifuna!” as the Senator stepped up to speak. The overwhelming reception and deafening cheers for Sifuna transformed the atmosphere, completely stealing the spotlight at the memorial grounds.
A viral video detailing the incident quickly swept across TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook, igniting intense discussions among political analysts and ordinary citizens. Social media users expressed surprise at the visible rift within the orange party’s rank and file, pointing to the contrasting receptions given to different party factions.
While some Kenyans on social media criticized the leaders who walked out for displaying political divisions during a solemn family memorial, others noted that the crowd’s energetic response to Sifuna underscored shifting political dynamics within the ODM party’s base following the loss of its long-serving leader.
