Ruto Suffers Major Coast Blow as Aisha Jumwa Ditches UDA

NAIROBI, Kenya — In a fresh setback for the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), President William Ruto is confronting a major political realignment at the Coast following the departure of former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa from the ruling party.

Coming shortly after intense political friction following the Ol-Kalou by-election, Jumwa’s abrupt exit deals a severe blow to President Ruto’s strategy to consolidate his support base ahead of the 2027 General Election.

A Bitter Fallout

Speaking during a press conference at her Kakuyuni residence in Malindi, the former Malindi Member of Parliament revealed her decision came after deep reflection and extensive consultations with her constituents.

A tearful Jumwa detailed growing frustration and unaddressed grievances within UDA, citing intense friction regarding her ambition to contest the Kilifi gubernatorial seat.

“After a deep reflection, heartfelt prayer and countless consultations with the people I serve, I have made one of the most difficult decisions of my political life. From today, Aisha Jumwa Katana is no longer a member of the UDA.”

Jumwa accused party leadership of sidelining key founders and expressed frustration over broad-based political arrangements that threaten local ambitions. She confirmed that she will seek a new political outfit to anchor her 2027 gubernatorial bid.

Strategic Implications for 2027

During the 2022 campaigns, Jumwa served as one of Ruto’s chief ground mobilizers, helping the UDA party challenge traditional regional dominance previously held by the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Her exit signals emerging cracks in the ruling party’s regional footholds, complicating the President’s efforts to keep his coalition intact as political factions realign for the next election cycle.
