Speaking after his appearance before the Senate committee, Wamatangi dismissed claims that his attendance signaled a crisis within his administration.
Instead, he described the move as a demonstration of transparency and respect for oversight institutions mandated to safeguard public funds.
As governor, I am the chief accounting authority of Kiambu County. It is my duty to ensure that every shilling allocated to us is properly utilized and accounted for,” Wamatangi said. “Appearing before the Senate is not an admission of wrongdoing but a constitutional obligation.”
The Senate committee had summoned the governor to respond to audit queries raised by the Office of the Auditor-General regarding the county’s financial statements for a previous fiscal year.
Among the issues under review were expenditure irregularities, pending bills, procurement processes, and revenue collection mechanisms.
Wamatangi maintained that his administration has made significant strides in improving financial management systems, including digitizing revenue collection and strengthening internal audit controls.
He told senators that his government has also enhanced monitoring mechanisms to curb leakages and ensure compliance with public finance laws.
