No Hiding from Scrutiny: Kiambu Governor Takes Bold Stand Before Public Accounts Committee

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has defended his decision to personally appear before the Senate Standing Committee on Public Accounts, stating that the county government must take direct responsibility for the management and accountability of public resources.

Speaking after his appearance before the Senate committee, Wamatangi dismissed claims that his attendance signaled a crisis within his administration.

Instead, he described the move as a demonstration of transparency and respect for oversight institutions mandated to safeguard public funds.

As governor, I am the chief accounting authority of Kiambu County. It is my duty to ensure that every shilling allocated to us is properly utilized and accounted for,” Wamatangi said. “Appearing before the Senate is not an admission of wrongdoing but a constitutional obligation.”

The Senate committee had summoned the governor to respond to audit queries raised by the Office of the Auditor-General regarding the county’s financial statements for a previous fiscal year.

Among the issues under review were expenditure irregularities, pending bills, procurement processes, and revenue collection mechanisms.

Wamatangi maintained that his administration has made significant strides in improving financial management systems, including digitizing revenue collection and strengthening internal audit controls.

He told senators that his government has also enhanced monitoring mechanisms to curb leakages and ensure compliance with public finance laws.

The governor emphasized that devolution thrives on accountability, noting that oversight by Parliament and its committees strengthens public confidence in county governments.

He urged other county chiefs not to shy away from appearing before oversight bodies when called upon.

Members of the committee pressed the governor for detailed explanations on specific audit concerns, seeking timelines for resolving outstanding issues.

Wamatangi assured the panel that corrective measures are already underway and pledged full cooperation with oversight agencies.

Political analysts say the governor’s proactive approach could help build public trust, especially at a time when counties across the country face heightened scrutiny over fiscal discipline.

However, they note that the true test will lie in how swiftly and effectively the county addresses the audit queries raised.
