The Nairobi Senator, who also serves as Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), said he had no involvement whatsoever in the chaos that unfolded during the weekend rally, where police lobbed teargas canisters to disperse sections of the crowd.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Sifuna questioned the logic behind claims that he could have orchestrated the incident, arguing that such an action would have undermined his own political objectives.

Why would I mobilize supporters for a rally and then turn around to disrupt it? That does not make any sense,” Sifuna said. “These are cheap and desperate political tactics aimed at tarnishing my name.”

The Kakamega rally, which had drawn hundreds of supporters, descended into confusion after police moved in to quell what authorities termed as security concerns.

Videos circulating on social media showed supporters fleeing as teargas filled the air, sparking outrage and speculation among political actors.

Some local leaders had insinuated that the chaos was stage-managed to gain political sympathy or to discredit rival factions.

However, Sifuna dismissed those suggestions, maintaining that he remains focused on promoting unity and issue-based politics.

This is a clear case of political propaganda. My focus remains on engaging wananchi on matters of governance, accountability and development. I will not be distracted by baseless accusations,” he added.

The senator further called on security agencies to provide a transparent account of what transpired during the rally.

He emphasized the need for professionalism in handling political gatherings, noting that unnecessary force only heightens tensions.

Political analysts say the incident reflects the growing tensions within opposition circles and heightened political activity as leaders position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.

Kakamega County has recently become a battleground for influence among key political players seeking to consolidate regional support.

Sifuna’s remarks come amid broader internal debates within ODM and the larger opposition movement, where leaders have traded accusations over strategy and loyalty.

Despite the friction, the Nairobi Senator insisted that unity remains paramount.

I stand for democratic space where leaders can engage citizens freely without intimidation,” he said.

As investigations into the Kakamega incident continue, attention now shifts to whether security agencies will clarify the circumstances surrounding the teargassing and address the political fallout that has followed.

For now, Sifuna maintains that the allegations against him are nothing more than an attempt to score political points at his expense.
