Babu Owino Hits Out at ODM Over Plan to Hand Sakaja 2027 Party Ticket

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, has broken his silence regarding reports that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) plans to offer Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja the party’s ticket for the 2027 gubernatorial election.

In a fiery video statement that has sent ripples through Nairobi’s political landscape, the outspoken lawmaker expressed deep disappointment, calling out the party’s management for entertaining the idea of backing Sakaja.

Babu Owino questioned the logic of handing an ODM ticket to Sakaja, pointing out that the sitting governor never supported ODM leader Raila Odinga at any point in his political career. Owino detailed how Sakaja aligned with opposing political camps throughout major election cycles—supporting Mwai Kibaki in 2007, Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013 and 2017, and William Ruto in 2022.

“In 2007, Sakaja supported Kibaki because he did not want Raila. In 2013, he supported Uhuru and did the same in 2017… In 2022, he supported Ruto instead of Raila, but now ODM wants to back Sakaja,” Babu stated, terming the move an insult to loyal party members who have sacrificed for the movement.

The controversy follows Governor Sakaja’s recent disclosure that section leaders within ODM had approached him with an invitation to seek re-election on the orange party ticket.

Despite the internal party friction, Babu Owino reassured his supporters that his ambition to lead Nairobi remains intact. The legislator affirmed that he will be on the ballot for the Nairobi County gubernatorial race in 2027, expressing confidence that he will defeat Sakaja regardless of which party ticket the governor runs on.
