As political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election, fresh cracks have emerged within the opposition after Party of National Unity (PNU) leader Peter Munya rejected the proposal to use former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence as the venue for talks aimed at uniting anti-government forces.
Munya insisted that discussions on building a formidable opposition coalition must be held in a neutral environment that inspires confidence among all participating leaders.
He argued that hosting the negotiations at Gachagua’s private residence could create the perception that one individual was dictating the direction of the alliance.
The former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary emphasized that any coalition seeking to challenge President William Ruto’s administration must be founded on equality, mutual respect and collective leadership rather than personality politics.
According to Munya, the opposition should avoid actions that may alienate potential partners before formal negotiations even begin.
His remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are intensifying consultations to forge a united political vehicle capable of mounting a strong challenge in the next presidential contest.
Several leaders have been engaging in behind-the-scenes meetings to harmonize their strategies and identify common priorities.
Sources within the opposition indicate that disagreements over the venue of the talks reflect broader concerns about leadership, decision-making and the overall structure of the proposed alliance.
While some allies view Wamunyoro as a symbolic political base following Gachagua’s fallout with the Kenya Kwanza administration, others believe the negotiations should be conducted in a setting that does not appear to favor any particular faction.

Munya maintained that unity cannot be achieved through symbolism alone but through inclusive dialogue that accommodates every stakeholder regardless of political strength or regional influence.
He urged opposition leaders to focus on developing a common agenda centered on economic recovery, governance reforms, accountability and the rising cost of living.
