A fresh clash over Kenya’s election management has erupted, and this time the disagreement has drawn a sharp response from Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.

Maraga, speaking on September 15, called for the abolition of the national presidential tallying centre at Bomas of Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He argued that the Constitution does not provide for a national tallying centre and that presidential results should be counted, tallied, verified and announced at polling stations before being collated at constituency level.
His position has now attracted a pointed response from Duale, who questioned how results from thousands of polling stations across the country would be aggregated if the national process were removed.
“Really? Who will do the aggregation of the results from the thousands of polling stations across the country, Mr Former CJ. Don’t think we are idiots. Read the Constitution and electoral laws,” Duale wrote in a post on X on September 16.
The exchange has opened another debate over the constitutional and practical framework governing presidential elections.
Maraga’s coalition maintains that results declared at polling stations are final and that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission should not retally or alter results already declared at polling stations and constituencies.
Duale, however, has focused on the practical question of bringing together figures from across the country.
With the 2027 election approaching, the disagreement places electoral reforms firmly back in the national spotlight.
