Maina delivered the worrying message while reflecting on what she described as the possible involvement of intelligence operatives in the country’s political affairs.
According to her, the National Intelligence Service enlisted several operatives within the political class, a development she fears could eventually weaken and sink a united opposition.
Her remarks have sparked concern because opposition leaders have increasingly been working toward finding common ground and possibly settling on a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.
Maina warned that the period leading to the selection of that candidate could be particularly difficult, suggesting that political divisions and competing interests could test the opposition’s unity.
“May the good Lord have mercy on us,” Maina said, describing the coming months as potentially the longest period for those hoping to see the opposition unite.
She further suggested that the opposition could be walking into a carefully prepared political trap if its leaders fail to recognize the forces working against their unity.
The remarks come at a delicate moment, with several opposition figures positioning themselves for influence while consultations over a possible joint presidential bid continue.
Maina, however, appeared to distance herself from claims of being a political expert, saying she was simply applying her rational mind when assessing the unfolding political developments.
