Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has urged Kenyans residing in the United States to avoid returning home in a hurry, painting a grim picture of the country’s economic and political state.
Speaking during a diaspora engagement meeting in Oregon as part of his ongoing US tour, the former Deputy President advised citizens abroad to stay put and assist fellow Kenyans seeking to relocate.
He described the situation in Kenya as unfavourable, pointing to rising joblessness, limited economic opportunities, and systemic governance failures as the primary reasons citizens should remain abroad.
The DCP leader strongly criticized the current administration for squandering public resources on expensive foreign benchmarking trips to address domestic issues.
He argued that the government should instead engage diaspora professionals who possess the technical knowledge needed to resolve local challenges, including urban drainage crises and crumbling public infrastructure.
Highlighting the persistent healthcare crisis in Kenya, Gachagua noted that basic service delivery had deteriorated significantly under the current leadership.
Gachagua’s remarks come amid his 50-day political and consultative tour across several American states aimed at mobilizing diaspora support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He reported encountering widespread frustration among Kenyans living abroad regarding high taxation, mismanagement of public resources, and weakened devolved governance structures.
The warning underscores a growing narrative by opposition figures that the current administration has failed to stabilize the economy.
By directly encouraging further emigration and diaspora retention, Gachagua’s address marks a sharp political indictment of the country’s socio-economic trajectory.
