Orengo Moves to Lead LDP for 2027 Coalition, Faces Internal Pushback
KWALE, Kenya — Siaya Governor James Orengo has moved to take charge of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), positioning the historic outfit as his primary political vehicle and an anchor for a united opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Addressing LDP delegates in Kwale County on October 26, 2026, Orengo rallied opposition entities to assemble a formidable front. Speaking at Golini over the weekend, he called on major opposition groupings—including Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Democratic Movement, Ukombozi, and the Jubilee faction linked to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i—to unite behind a single flag-bearer to challenge President William Ruto.
However, Orengo’s takeover bid has triggered a bitter internal leadership row. Former LDP leader Prof. Fred Ogolla has publicly challenged the transition, questioning whether the Siaya Governor is legally registered as a party member.
In a statement issued on October 6, Ogolla termed the move to replace him a betrayal, demanding that Orengo disclose his official resignation date from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) or produce a valid LDP membership number.
Ogolla also criticized the party’s alignment with the Ukombozi-Linda Mwananchi coalition, alleging that Secretary-General Dennis Kodhe unilaterally steered LDP toward Orengo’s political direction at the expense of its long-term goals. Ogolla warned of an impending showdown at the party’s upcoming National Delegates Conference, though no official date has been announced.
LDP holds significant history in Kenyan politics, famously joining forces with the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) in 2002 alongside Raila Odinga to end KANU’s 39-year rule. Whether the party can serve as a similar rallying point for 2027 now rests on resolving Orengo’s membership validity and settling its internal succession struggle.
