Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly opposed plans by the government to construct a State Lodge in Imenti, calling on President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki to abandon the proposal and consider alternative locations.

Speaking during a public engagement in the Mt Kenya region, Gachagua argued that the project was unnecessary and unlikely to address the pressing challenges facing residents.

He maintained that public resources should instead be directed toward development projects that have a direct impact on the livelihoods of ordinary citizens.

“We are calling upon Ruto and his deputy to abandon this issue of putting up a State Lodge in Imenti. If they want to put up a State Lodge, they can do it elsewhere,” Gachagua said, drawing cheers from supporters who attended the event.

The former deputy president questioned the timing of the proposed project, saying the country is currently grappling with economic challenges that require urgent attention.

According to him, government priorities should focus on improving roads, supporting farmers, creating employment opportunities and lowering the cost of living rather than investing in new official residences.

His remarks come amid growing debate over reports that the government is considering establishing a State Lodge in the Imenti area.

Supporters of the project argue that it could enhance government presence in the region and provide a venue for official functions and presidential engagements.

However, critics have expressed concerns about the potential cost of the project, especially at a time when the government is implementing austerity measures and seeking to increase revenue collection.

Some leaders have also questioned whether such a facility is necessary given the existence of other State Lodges across the country.

Gachagua’s comments are likely to fuel further political debate in the Mt Kenya region, where competition for influence has intensified in recent months.

The former deputy president has remained vocal on issues affecting the region and has frequently challenged decisions made by the national government since leaving office.

Political analysts say the dispute over the proposed State Lodge could become another flashpoint in the evolving political landscape, particularly as leaders position themselves ahead of future political contests.

Despite the criticism, government officials have yet to issue a detailed response to Gachagua’s remarks or clarify the status of the proposed project.

Whether the plan proceeds or is shelved may depend on public consultations, budgetary considerations and the government’s broader development agenda.

For now, Gachagua has made his position clear if a new State Lodge must be built, he believes Imenti should not be the chosen location.
