The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced changes to the registration timelines for Competency-Based Assessment (CBA), a move expected to affect thousands of learners, teachers, and schools across the country.

In a notice issued to education stakeholders, KNEC said the revised registration schedule is aimed at enhancing efficiency in the management of learner data and ensuring that all eligible candidates are captured within the stipulated assessment period.

The council urged school heads and teachers to adhere strictly to the new timelines to avoid inconveniences that could affect learners’ participation in the assessments.

According to KNEC, the adjustments have been informed by the need to streamline assessment processes under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which continues to be rolled out across different grades.

The council noted that timely registration is critical for planning, resource allocation, and the successful administration of assessments.

Schools have been directed to verify learner details before submitting registration information through the designated online platforms.

KNEC emphasized that accurate data entry remains a key requirement, warning that errors in candidate information could lead to complications during assessment administration and certification.

Education officials welcomed the move, saying the revised timelines will provide institutions with a clearer framework for managing registration activities.

Some school administrators, however, called for increased awareness campaigns to ensure that all schools, particularly those in remote areas, are fully informed of the changes and can comply within the specified period.

The announcement comes as the education sector continues to adapt to the demands of the CBC framework, which places greater emphasis on continuous assessment and the development of practical competencies among learners.

Under the system, assessments are conducted at different stages of learning and contribute to a learner’s overall progression.

KNEC further urged parents to work closely with schools to confirm that learner records are accurate and complete before registration deadlines lapse.

The council noted that cooperation among teachers, parents, and school administrators is essential in ensuring a smooth registration exercise.

Stakeholders have been encouraged to regularly check official communication channels for updates regarding registration procedures and timelines.

KNEC reiterated its commitment to delivering credible and efficient assessment services while supporting the successful implementation of the CBC programme.

With the new registration schedule now in effect, schools are expected to begin preparations immediately to ensure compliance and prevent last-minute challenges that could disrupt assessment activities.

The council expressed confidence that the changes will improve coordination and strengthen the integrity of the country’s competency based assessment system.
