Residents of Mathakwa Village in Mirangine Ward, Nyandarua County, are a step closer to accessing electricity following an inspection tour of the ongoing rural electrification project by senior government officials led by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria and Principal Secretary for Energy Alex Wachira.

During the visit, the leaders assessed the progress of the electricity installation works, interacted with local residents, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding electricity access across rural Kenya.

Kuria said the project is part of the government’s broader agenda to improve the quality of life for wananchi by ensuring that more households are connected to the national power grid.

He noted that electricity remains a critical driver of economic growth, education, healthcare, and small-scale enterprises in rural communities.

Accompanied by PS Wachira, Kuria walked through sections of Mathakwa Village where electricity poles have already been erected and power lines are being installed.

The two leaders also listened to concerns from residents regarding the pace of implementation and expressed confidence that the remaining work would be completed within the planned timelines.

Speaking to residents, Kuria emphasized that access to reliable electricity would unlock new economic opportunities for families and businesses.

He encouraged the community to take advantage of the connections by investing in income-generating activities that depend on electric power, including agro-processing, retail businesses, and digital services.

PS Wachira reiterated the Ministry of Energy’s commitment to accelerating rural electrification projects in line with the government’s development agenda.

He noted that expanding electricity coverage remains a key priority aimed at reducing inequality between urban and rural areas while promoting inclusive economic growth.

Residents welcomed the inspection visit, saying the project has renewed hope for improved livelihoods.

Many expressed optimism that electricity would transform education by enabling students to study at night, improve security through better lighting, and support local businesses by reducing dependence on costly alternative energy sources.

The inspection comes as the government continues rolling out infrastructure projects across various counties to boost connectivity and spur socio-economic development.

Rural electrification has remained one of the flagship initiatives designed to enhance access to essential services while supporting Kenya’s industrialization ambitions.

Once completed, the Mathakwa Village electricity project is expected to connect hundreds of households, schools, trading centres, and public institutions to the national grid.

Local leaders expressed confidence that the initiative will significantly improve living standards and stimulate economic activities in Mirangine Ward, making it one of the key development milestones for the area.
