Uhuru has indicated that he is ready to step down as Jubilee Party leader following a High Court ruling that upheld restrictions on retired presidents holding political party offices.
His office said he would respect the judgment and facilitate the leadership transition in accordance with the law and Jubilee’s constitution.
The High Court, in a decision by Justice Lawrence Mugambi, upheld Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act. The provision prevents a retired president from holding office in a political party for more than six months after leaving the presidency.
However, the ruling does not prevent Uhuru from remaining politically active. The court made clear that retired presidents can continue belonging to political parties and participating in political activities, even though they cannot retain formal party leadership beyond the stipulated period.
Uhuru welcomed the ruling, describing it through his office as a reaffirmation of Kenya’s democratic maturity. He also signalled his willingness to see Jubilee’s leadership transition completed openly and lawfully.
The development comes at a sensitive political moment, with parties and coalitions positioning themselves ahead of 2027. While Uhuru may be leaving a formal party leadership position, his continued political participation remains legally possible.
