A small contribution of Sh55 has now opened a much bigger question around Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement, with the issue moving from political rallies into the courtroom. Alan Masakhalia has filed a petition at the High Court seeking orders compelling Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Linda Mwananchi to provide a full account of funds collected through Paybill number 3033049 and other fundraising channels.

Masakhalia says he contributed Sh55 after responding to public appeals for financial support for the movement. He argues that contributors should know how much was collected, where the funds are held and how the money has been spent.

The petition comes months after Linda Mwananchi launched its fundraising drive in July. Organisers reported that 9,419 people contributed Sh519,144 during the first day, with the average contribution standing at about Sh55. The total later reached approximately Sh2.21 million within 36 hours.

Sifuna had explained that the Paybill was registered in his name because Linda Mwananchi had not been registered as a political party. He also said the money was intended to support the movement’s operations, including rally logistics and service providers, and promised accountability.

Masakhalia is now asking the court to scrutinise the funds and expenditure. The case adds another legal issue around Sifuna’s political movement as preparations for 2027 intensify.

The court’s eventual determination could clarify the accountability obligations surrounding the contributions and how such funds should be handled if the political project changes direction.
