Mandate or Loyalty? Makueni MCA Sparks Debate over County Workers’ Votes
MAKUENI – A political storm is brewing in Makueni County following controversial remarks by Tulimani Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), Kyalo Mumo, demanding total political allegiance from all county staff ahead of the August 10, 2027 General Election.
Addressing attendees at a local gathering, Hon. Mumo stirred significant debate by declaring that county workers are obligated to re-elect Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., arguing that employment by the administration binds workers politically to the county chief executive.
“All county employees, by virtue of being employed by the County Government of Makueni, MUST vote for Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. on August 10, 2027,” stated Mumo.
To emphasize his point, the Ward Representative drew a vivid cultural analogy regarding public appointment terms.

“When you are given that employment letter, that promotion letter, that’s like dowry payment; you are all married to the same ‘man’,” Mumo asserted, suggesting that receiving remuneration from the county administration creates an unwritten pledge of electoral backing for the incumbent governor.
The MCA’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions across Makueni County. While staunch supporters of Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. view the sentiment as a call for team unity and performance continuity, critics and governance observers have voiced strong reservations.
Legal experts note that Kenya’s Constitution guarantees every citizen, including public servants, the fundamental freedom to vote by secret ballot without coercion or intimidation.
As political maneuvering intensifies nationwide ahead of the 2027 polls, Mumo’s comments highlight the delicate balance between civil service neutrality and local political loyalty in county administration. Whether county employees will heed the MCA’s controversial call remains a major talking point in Makueni’s evolving political landscape.
