The political storm surrounding Edwin Sifuna’s departure from ODM has taken another dramatic turn, with former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala making a serious allegation about what he claims was happening behind the scenes.
His remarks have quickly drawn attention online and added a new dimension to the already heated dispute. Read Full Article
Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV, Malala alleged that ODM had billions of shillings in its account following the death of former party leader Raila Odinga, but that only a fraction remained months later.
Malala claimed the party had approximately Sh2.7 billion when Raila died, but alleged that the amount had fallen to Sh78 million by the time of a recent review.
He went further, making a direct connection between the alleged financial situation and Sifuna’s removal from the party.
According to Malala, ODM had allegedly spent or accounted for about Sh2.6 billion over a period of seven months. He suggested that this, rather than the public disciplinary explanations, was the real reason Sifuna was pushed out.
The claims have not been independently established, and Malala did not provide publicly verified financial documents in the remarks cited here.
Sifuna’s dispute with ODM has already gone through several legal and political stages. The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal recently upheld his removal as Secretary-General, finding that ODM’s disciplinary process was lawful and that he had been given an opportunity to respond to the allegations.
Malala’s latest allegations are therefore likely to intensify debate over Sifuna’s departure and the internal affairs of ODM as political activity ahead of the 2027 election continues to build.
