Tensions are rising within Kenya’s opposition politics after a youth wing allied to the Orange Democratic Movement escalated its demands over delayed party financing, setting the stage for possible street protests if their grievances are not addressed.

The ODM Youths has issued a seven day ultimatum to Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, demanding the immediate release of Sh12 billion allegedly owed to the Orange Democratic Movement.

The group says the funds are critical to sustaining party activities and safeguarding democratic participation ahead of future political engagements.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, the youth leaders accused the Treasury of deliberately frustrating the opposition by withholding resources legally allocated to political parties.

They argued that the delay was not only unconstitutional but also a direct attack on multiparty democracy, warning that continued inaction would leave them with no option but to mobilise mass demonstrations across major towns.

According to the group, the disputed Sh12 billion represents accumulated allocations meant to support party operations, civic education and grassroots mobilisation.

They claim that while the ruling establishment enjoys unhindered access to state resources, opposition parties are systematically starved of funds to weaken their organisational capacity.

We are giving the Cabinet Secretary seven days to do the right thing,” said one youth leader. “If the money is not released, we will take to the streets peacefully but firmly. This is not just about ODM; it is about fairness and the rule of law.”

The ultimatum adds to growing pressure on Mbadi, who previously served as a senior ODM official before joining the Cabinet.

Critics within opposition circles have questioned whether his current role has placed him in a difficult position, balancing state responsibilities against expectations from his former political base.

Political analysts warn that the standoff could further strain relations between the government and the opposition at a time when the country is already grappling with economic pressures and public discontent.

Some observers note that youth-led protests have historically acted as flashpoints in Kenyan politics, often forcing the state to the negotiating table.

The Treasury has yet to issue an official response to the ultimatum. However, insiders suggest that any release of funds would need to follow strict legal and budgetary procedures, a point the youth leaders dismiss as bureaucratic delay tactics.

As the seven day countdown begins, all eyes are on whether the Treasury will move to defuse the situation or whether Kenya is headed for another round of politically charged protests driven by an increasingly restless youth constituency.
