Political commentator Eric Okeyo has dismissed President William Ruto’s frequent tours to the Nyanza region as mere political spectacle, accusing the executive of using development promises to mask calculated electoral maneuvers ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a televised panel discussion analyzing national politics, Okeyo highlighted that President Ruto has made 39 visits to the Nyanza region over the last four years.
He cautioned members of the public against taking the high-profile visits at face value, arguing that anyone unfamiliar with the Head of State’s political style might mistakenly assume substantial economic development is taking place on the ground.
However, Okeyo emphasized that those who truly understand the President’s operational strategy recognize that these frequent tours are primarily designed as showbiz and political drama to lay early groundwork for his re-election campaign.
The analyst noted that despite the elaborate project launches, groundbreaking ceremonies, and public rallies held across counties such as Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, and Migori, very few tangible benefits have trickled down to ordinary residents.
According to Okeyo, the strategic focus on the opposition stronghold is aimed at neutralizing local political resistance and fragmenting traditional voting blocks rather than addressing long-standing economic grievances in the region.
Okeyo urged residents and local leaders to remain vigilant and differentiate between genuine state-backed development initiatives and strategic public relations campaigns.
He stressed that photo opportunities, presidential motorcades, and political declarations should not replace genuine accountability, policy implementation, and sustainable economic investment.
The remarks come amid heightened political realignments in Nyanza, where the ruling administration continues to aggressively court local politicians and voters.
Okeyo’s sharp assessment has reignited debate over whether the executive’s sustained engagement with the region will yield lasting infrastructure growth or simply serve as political optics leading into the next general election.
