Kenyans Turn Out in Large Numbers for Raila Odinga’s Candlelight Memorial
NAIROBI, Kenya — Thousands of Kenyans have gathered in designated locations across the country today to mark the start of a month-long commemoration honoring the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Honorable Raila Odinga.
The former Prime Minister passed away one year ago while receiving medical treatment in India, where he had been hospitalized for about two weeks.
According to viral video footage circulating across social media platforms, crowds of citizens gathered early at Nairobi’s historic Uhuru Park. The event marks the official kickoff of nationwide memorial activities dedicated to reflecting on Raila’s political legacy and democratic contributions to Kenya.
Nairobi County Governor His Excellency Johnson Sakaja, alongside top leadership from the Orange Democratic Movement, is slated to lead the central candle-lighting ceremony at the venue.

Similar gatherings are underway across major urban hubs and rural towns as part of the party’s organized “Light Up for Baba” campaign. In cities like Kisumu and Mombasa, supporters holding candles, banners, and portraits filled central squares to pay tribute to the veteran politician.
“We are here to remember his fight for social justice, democracy, and devolution,” said one attendee at Uhuru Park. “Even after a year, his imprint on our nation remains unforgettable.”
Organizers noted that today’s nationwide candlelight visual is the first major public event in a series of memorial activities scheduled throughout the month. Commemorations will culminate around mid-October, marking the exact date of his passing.
With security personnel deployed to maintain order amidst the heavy foot traffic at public grounds, officials have encouraged citizens across all political backgrounds to join peacefully in honoring the late leader’s memory.
