Mosiria Challenges Senator Sifuna to Action Over Eastleigh Building Collapse and City Safety Concerns
NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Nairobi County official Geoffrey Mosiria has publicly challenged Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to step up his oversight role and demand accountability from Governor Johnson Sakaja following the recent building collapse in Eastleigh.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Mosiria questioned the senator’s perceived silence six days after the tragedy, pointing out that Sifuna had yet to visit the site or confront the county executive over recurring building failures in the capital.
“Senator Sifuna, where are you when the people of Nairobi need you the most?” Mosiria posed, asking why the lawmaker has not summoned Governor Sakaja to explain the safety status of structures approved and constructed under the current administration.
Beyond oversight of the governor, Mosiria raised serious allegations regarding construction enforcement in the city. He claimed to have previously flagged two buildings for safety violations and attempted to halt their construction, only for works to resume illegally.
Both structures later collapsed, leading to fatal casualties. He urged the Senate to investigate the circumstances under which such dangerous projects were allowed to proceed despite warnings.
In addition to structural safety, Mosiria highlighted ongoing labor concerns within City Hall. He alleged that county enforcement staff face harassment and intimidation from goons while trying to discharge their duties, and claimed dedicated officers are routinely demoted or dismissed arbitrarily.
He urged Sifuna to intervene on behalf of public workers and safeguard staff welfare alongside public safety.
The county executive and Senator Sifuna have yet to issue official responses to Mosiria’s allegations regarding the site approvals and staff intimidation. However, the tragedy has reopened intense debate over construction standards and regulatory enforcement across Nairobi.
