NAIROBI, Kenya — Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga has been discharged from Nairobi Hospital following a two-week stay that drew significant public interest and temporarily sidelined the veteran politician.

The Siaya Senator left the medical facility on October 19 after being admitted on October 4. His release follows public remarks addressing intense speculation regarding his health.

While appearing in public during his stay, the veteran politician firmly defended his right to medical privacy, stating that holding a senior public position does not oblige him to disclose personal health details.

“I’ve been sick like any other Kenyan can be sick, and like any other human being,” Oburu remarked, criticizing those who sought public updates about his condition.

“Sickness is not public. I have no obligation whatsoever to announce my sickness.” Although acknowledging that he was still recovering, he reassured the nation that his health was steadily improving.

The hospital stay coincided with a deeply personal milestone. On October 15, Oburu celebrated his 83rd birthday from his hospital room—a date that also marked the first anniversary of the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Reflecting on the moment in a social media tribute, Oburu described the date as a “sacred intersection of life and eternity,” honoring the enduring bond and political legacy shared between the brothers.

Oburu’s return to active life comes at a critical juncture for ODM. Having taken over party leadership following Raila’s passing, he faces the task of steering the party through a sensitive transition while defining its political strategy and alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.
