Speaking during a party engagement, Dr. Oburu stated that his decision to vie is conditional upon the ODM constitution. The internal processes, he emphasized, must be strictly respected.

He added that the party constitution clearly outlines who should be the presidential flag-bearer. This is applicable if ODM opts to participate in the presidential race.

In a statement likely to ignite political debate within the party, Dr. Oburu urged any ODM member with presidential ambitions to respect the party’s rules.

The party constitution is very clear on the matter. Should ODM decide to field a presidential candidate, the laid-down process must be followed,” he said.

He issued a firm warning to party members seeking the top seat. He stated that anyone who wishes to vie for the presidency must follow ODM’s constitutional pathway. Those unwilling should consider doing so outside the party.

If there is anyone in the party who wants to contest for the presidency, let them do so, but outside ODM. The party will not be used as a vehicle for unconstitutional ambitions,” he declared.

The remarks appear to be aimed at guarding the party’s unity and identity, especially at a time when internal realignments have heightened ahead of the 2027 polls.

Political analysts say Dr. Oburu’s declaration introduces a fresh dynamic in national politics and places ODM at a potential crossroads, with the party having to decide whether to enter the presidential race or back a coalition candidate.

For now, the political spotlight turns to ODM as Kenyans await to see whether the party will embrace the challenge of the 2027 presidential contest and how President Ruto will respond to a possible heavyweight duel.
