A section of political leaders allied to President William Ruto from the Rift Valley has publicly endorsed National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula as their preferred presidential candidate for the 2032 General Election, signaling what could be the beginning of early succession politics within the ruling coalition.
The leaders, speaking at separate political gatherings in the Rift Valley region, praised Wetang’ula’s leadership, experience, and commitment to national unity, arguing that he possesses the qualities needed to steer Kenya after President Ruto completes his constitutional two-term tenure.
They described the Speaker as a seasoned statesman who has served the country in various capacities, including as Foreign Affairs Minister, Senator, and leader of the Ford Kenya party.
According to the leaders, Wetang’ula’s political experience and ability to build alliances across different regions make him a suitable candidate to succeed President Ruto.
The endorsement comes at a time when conversations surrounding the 2032 presidential succession are slowly gaining momentum despite the next General Election still being years away.
While no official campaign has been launched, political observers say such declarations are aimed at shaping future alliances and positioning key figures within Kenya’s evolving political landscape.

Supporters of Wetang’ula argued that his loyalty to the Kenya Kwanza administration and his role in supporting the government’s legislative agenda have earned him the confidence of many leaders within the coalition.
They urged supporters to begin laying the groundwork for what they described as a national movement behind his potential presidential bid.
However, the endorsement is expected to spark debate within Kenya Kwanza, where several influential leaders are also seen as possible contenders for the presidency after Ruto’s tenure.
Analysts note that while endorsements made this early may not determine the eventual candidate, they often serve to test political support and influence public discourse.
Neither Speaker Wetang’ula nor State House has officially commented on the endorsement.
The Speaker has previously maintained his focus on presiding over parliamentary business and has not publicly declared interest in the presidency.
Political analysts have cautioned that succession politics could distract leaders from delivering on the government’s development agenda if allowed to dominate public debate too early.
They have instead called on leaders to prioritize service delivery while allowing future political contests to unfold at the appropriate time.
Even so, the endorsement has added a new dimension to Kenya’s political conversation, with attention now turning to how other leaders within the Kenya Kwanza coalition will position themselves as the race to shape the country’s post-Ruto political future gradually takes form.
