Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Cleophas Malala launched a scathing attack against the Orange Democratic Movement, alleging financial mismanagement and misappropriation of party funds by its current leadership.
Addressing political gatherings in Western Kenya, Malala alleged that the opposition party’s financial reserves dropped sharply over a seven-month period.
According to the former Kakamega senator, the party’s bank accounts held 2.7 billion Kenya shillings following the death of its longtime party leader Raila Odinga.
However, he claimed that recent financial audits revealed a massive deficit, leaving only 78 million Kenya shillings in the party’s reserves.
Malala accused the current managers of the outfit of systematically depleting the financial resources rather than stewarding the party’s assets.
He argued that the rapid depletion of 2.6 billion Kenya shillings points to internal financial misconduct and a focus on self-aggrandizement among the top ranking members remaining at the helm of the organization.
Furthermore, the politician linked the alleged financial improprieties directly to the internal wrangles that led to the exit of former Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna.
Malala asserted that Sifuna was ousted from his position because he resisted the continuous siphoning of party funds, making him a target for leaders seeking unhindered access to the accounts.
The explosive statements come at a time of heightened political realignment in Kenya, with Malala actively advocating for alternative leadership models ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
The allegations have reignited debates surrounding accountability, internal governance, and political party funding, though officials from the Orange Democratic Movement have yet to issue a formal response addressing the figures raised by the former lawmaker.
