The political temperature rose sharply after former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i delivered a pointed message aimed at President William Ruto, challenging the growing use of the word “rebellion” in Kenya’s political debate.

His remarks came against the backdrop of Ruto’s description of former President Uhuru Kenyatta as a “rebel leader.” Matiang’i pointed to what he described as a striking contradiction: Uhuru had accepted a High Court ruling and confirmed that he would relinquish leadership of the Jubilee Party.
According to Matiang’i, accepting a court decision demonstrates respect for constitutional institutions rather than defiance of the government. He further argued that political disagreement should not be treated as hostility toward the state.
The former CS shifted attention from political rivalries to ordinary Kenyans, saying citizens raising concerns about unemployment and the rising cost of living are expressing their own frustrations rather than speaking at the direction of former leaders.
He also challenged the administration to focus more heavily on delivering services and addressing citizens’ concerns instead of concentrating on the forces behind opposition politics.
Matiang’i’s central message was that Kenya’s political system works best when institutions remain within their constitutional roles.
In his view, the government should focus on governing, opposition parties should scrutinize those in power, and political parties should compete for public support.
Ultimately, he said, the authority to determine Kenya’s political direction belongs to citizens through democratic participation, not through accusations of rebellion.
