The political debate surrounding Rigathi Gachagua’s tour of the United States has taken an unexpected turn after former IEBC commissioner Roselyn Akombe questioned the message behind his engagements with Kenyans living abroad.

Her remarks have placed Gachagua’s US tour under fresh scrutiny, with questions emerging over the values and policies that political leaders should champion when dealing with migrants and foreigners.
“The irony of flying to New York to speak with Kenyan immigrants in the US. While at home you are threatening fellow East Africans seeking a better life!” Akombe stated.
The comment quickly opened a wider conversation about migration, regional integration and the treatment of people who cross borders in search of jobs and better living conditions.
For Gachagua, his American engagements provide an opportunity to connect with Kenyans in the diaspora and discuss issues affecting them.
However, Akombe’s criticism shifts attention to what she considers a difficult question: should leaders advocate for the interests of migrants abroad while supporting policies that may make life harder for migrants within Kenya?
