Political tensions have escalated dramatically following a sharp exchange between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli.
The dispute centers on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and his potential ambitions for the presidency ahead of the upcoming general election. Many Kenyans have placed their hopes to the former Orange Democratic Movement Party Secretary General.
The confrontation began after Atwoli publicly dismissed Sifuna’s credentials to run for the country’s highest office, asserting that the senator lacks the requisite standing and broad national support.
Responding directly to these assertions during a political gathering, Gachagua launched a fiery counterattack against the veteran trade unionist, staunchly defending Sifuna’s right to pursue the executive seat.
In a blistering rebuke, Gachagua dismissed Atwoli as out of touch with contemporary political realities, characterizing the long-serving union leader as a relic of the past who belongs in a museum.
He went further, suggesting that age and memory loss have clouded Atwoli’s judgment, alleging that the COTU leader is suffering from dementia and no longer possesses the intellectual capacity to dictate political outcomes or determine the political futures of younger leaders like Sifuna.
Gachagua argued that the era of political gatekeeping is over, emphasizing that every eligible Kenyan leader, including Sifuna, reserves the constitutional right to seek the presidency without seeking approval from established political figures.
He accused Atwoli of abusing his union platform to act as a political broker for the state rather than championing the interests of workers or defending democratic choices.
The harsh exchange highlights growing generational friction and shifting realignments within the opposition, as various factions position themselves for executive succession.
Neither Atwoli nor COTU representatives have issued a formal response to Gachagua’s latest personal attack, but the public spat underscores the deepening divisions within Kenya’s political landscape.
