The advice comes amid broader concerns about the ability of the U.S. government to assist its citizens inside Iran.

The United States does not maintain a physical embassy or consular presence in Tehran. This means there is no direct diplomatic support available to Americans on the ground.

Instead, the Swiss Embassy in Tehran serves as the protecting power for U.S. interests and handles emergency cases when security conditions allow.

The State Department also reiterated its long standing Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Iran, citing risks of terrorism, kidnapping, wrongful detention, and civil unrest.

Given ongoing flight cancellations and limited commercial options, the alert advises U.S. citizens to consider land routes through neighboring countries such as Armenia or Türkiye if safe.

Officials warned that conditions could shift with little notice, and urged Americans to stay informed of local developments and embassy updates as the situation continues to unfold.
