A public dressing-down of a senior government official by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has sparked widespread debate, prompting a swift response from President William Ruto’s Principal Secretary.
Ichung’wah left many Kenyans talking after a video surfaced online showing him sharply criticizing Education PS Belio Kipsang Bitok during a meeting attended by education stakeholders.
In the clip, the Kikuyu MP accused the PS of neglecting his duties by spending too much time at his Nairobi office instead of visiting schools across the country.
According to Ichung’wah, the PS had failed to adequately assess the realities facing learning institutions, particularly the challenges affecting Grade 10 students under the new curriculum.

He argued that effective policy decisions can only be made by leaders who are “on the ground” and in direct contact with schools, teachers, and learners.
Following the backlash, Bitok took to his official social media platforms to defend himself.
He dismissed claims of absentee leadership, insisting that he has been actively engaged in fieldwork and regular consultations with education stakeholders nationwide.
The PS maintained that his office remains committed to addressing challenges within the education sector and delivering reforms aligned with President Ruto’s agenda.
The exchange has reignited conversations about accountability, leadership style, and coordination within government.
