A legal battle that has drawn widespread public attention took another dramatic turn on Monday, as supporters, lawyers and political leaders gathered at the High Court in Kiambu awaiting a decision that could shape the immediate future of a sitting Member of Parliament.

The courtroom atmosphere remained tense throughout the proceedings, with security heightened around the court premises following days of intense political debate over the arrest of Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia.

The legislator’s detention had ignited mixed reactions, with allies accusing authorities of targeting him over his political remarks while others insisted that due legal process should be allowed to take its course.

Justice finally came in the afternoon when the High Court ordered Kaguchia’s release from police custody upon payment of a police cash bail of Sh100,000.

The ruling means the legislator will regain his freedom as investigations into the allegations facing him continue. The court emphasized that the release does not amount to an acquittal but ensures that his constitutional rights are protected while the legal process proceeds.

Kaguchia was arrested on Monday morning outside the Royal Media Services studios in Nairobi after spending the night inside the media house. The MP had claimed detectives were waiting to arrest him following controversial political remarks he allegedly made during a television interview.

His arrest quickly attracted attention from fellow politicians, lawyers and supporters, many of whom questioned the timing of the operation and accused investigative agencies of intimidating opposition voices.
